Service Description: This layer depicts polygons representing land within the Camas Prarie in Southern Idaho classified as either "irrigated", "non-irrigated" or "semi-irrigated", where the semi-irrigated classification typically depicts residential land. The creation of this dataset will be a multi-year effort.
Field boundaries are hand-digitized using National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery, Digital Ortho Photo Quadrangle (DOQQ) imagery, or other high resolution imagery for determining field boundaries.
Attribute assignments for irrigation status (irrigated, non-irrigated, and semi-irrigated) are determined using available Sentinel2, Landsat7, and Landsat8 satellite imagery for background reference. The Sentinel2 constellation is made up of two satellites with a 5-day revisit schedule. IDWR processes Sentinel2 imagery into 3-band, false color, 10-meter resolution scenes for the growing season. The Landsat constellation used for this project is made up of Landsat7 and Landsat8 with a 8-day revisit rate. IDWR processes Landsat imagery into 3-band, false-color, 30-meter resolution scenes for the growing season. National Agriculture Inventory Program (NAIP) imagery, Digital Ortho Photo Quadrangle (DOQQ) imagery, and other in-house, scanned aerial imagery may be used for determining irrigation status and refining the polygon geometry.
If you are interested in the evolution of IDWR's various “Irrigated Lands” projects, please contact IDWR’s GISInfo to obtain the Editing Methodology and Guidelines documentation where the interpretation and classification process is described in detail.
